  1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP/ACTIVITY (Identify the inclusive education theme(s) to be explored during this activity.)

In this workshop we will explore ways to enhance educational technology implementation in our Adult Education program. We will address the needs of ABE, GED, ESL and External Diploma students by focusing on software and equipment that is designed for use by our adult learners.

Participants will build on their current knowledge of three computer programs (Mavis Beacon keyboarding, Merit ESL and GED interactive software) by learning how to generate and interpret student progress reports and perform other administrative tasks.

Attendees will have hands-on practice with educational technology equipment, such as LDC projectors and wireless laptops which can be used in conjunction with our currently installed software to enhance student learning.

Participants will also practice trouble-shooting common technology issues in the Adult Education classroom.

  1. LEARNING STRANDS (List the learning strands in your discipline on which this proposal is focused.  These may include the repertoire of teaching strategies, increasing the depth of content knowledge, increasing the depth of understanding of the district curriculum, increasing the understanding of how students learn, and increasing the understanding of the instructional or developmental needs of all students.)

Teaching Strategies:  Instructors can use any of the three software suites (Mavis Beacon, GED Interactive or Merit) in the classroom for group instruction or assigned to individual students as needed to supplement their program of study.

Differentiated Instruction:  Data reports from each of the three featured programs will assist in identifying students who would benefit from further instruction as well as delineating which content area they need to address (example: student report from McGraw Hill GED Interactive may list a satisfactory GED Social Studies score vs. lower GED Math score).

  1. LEARNING OUTCOMES (List the skills, knowledge, and/or abilities pertinent to both the overall workshop/activity topic(s) and the selected inclusive education theme(s) that you expect participants to learn or develop more fully as a result of workshop participation.  We recommend that you have 3 to 5 learning outcomes.  Remember, a workshop/activity will not meet state requirement unless it is clear on how the participants (the teachers) will expand their own learning.)

After this workshop, participants will know how to:

Ø      Access and log on to Mavis Beacon keyboarding, Merit ESL and GED Interactive programs

Ø      Supervise students using program or use program for group instruction

Ø      Proper use of educational technology equipment (LCD projectors, large screen monitor)

Ø      Generate, print, assess student progress reports

  1. IMPACT ON STUDENT LEARNING (List the ways in which this activity will help improve the learning of all students (both general education and those with special needs) in a diverse learning environment.

Ø      Students who are preparing for the GED exam can work independently, according  to their schedule, using GED interactive software. Scheduling flexibility will improve student retention.

Ø      Students will learn how to generate, print and understand progress reports in Mavis Beacon Keyboarding, Merit ESL and GED interactive programs.  This will assist with self-assessment.

Ø      Students (and teachers) can target need areas based on above self-assessment and use software to work on specific skills.

Ø      Students (and teachers) have unlimited access to all 3 programs in our building on any computer at any time. Thus enabling us to meet the needs of various students (ABE, GED, EDP, ESL) who are also on multiple skill levels.
